Curriculums and Programs to Better Serve Atlanta Students

At the high school level, Atlanta International School offers a high level of language learning to both students who speak a second language and those who are bi and multi-lingual via the school's IB Middle Years and IB Diploma programs. Rachel Hovington, AIS' head of curriculum and professional development, says it's important for the school to offer such programs because they want students who develop skills that can lead to the design of innovative products and services. "Why?" Hovington asks. "Not just because they will have better college outcomes and employability in the future, but because of the very real need for humans to develop ways to solve environmental and societal problems that make the world a better place. Languages have always been a wonderful place for students to explore interdisciplinary themes and also provide the communication skills to collaborate and analyze real world problems."

Alumni say that such preparation and offerings have better prepared them than their peers when they enter both further education and the workplace Hovington says. "Humanities are contextualizing problems for us and allowing us to analyze solutions through the lens of individuals and societies," she says. "Arts are providing a safe space for students to develop risk-taking, creativity, confidence and practice collaboration that allows STEM skills to develop into real-world solutions." Parent survey data also shows that these programs have positive outcomes on their students, families and the communities.

Atlanta International School Goes on a Google Expedition

Atlanta, GA (February 3, 2016) - The Google Expeditions team arrived at Atlanta International School (AIS) yesterday to take students on a journey through time and space - all without leaving the classroom.

Google Expeditions is a new product, still in beta phase, that allows teachers to take their classes on virtual field trips, immersing students in experiences that bring abstract concepts to life, giving students a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom. It can transport students and staff to over 100 locations, including virtual trips to Machu Picchu, the Great Wall of China, the surface of Mars, and El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

"Google Expeditions provides a visually immersive environment that enhances classroom learning," says Dr. Adam Oberlin, social studies and language teacher. "As a curriculum supplement, this mix of high and low tech can take students on trips through time and space that may otherwise be impractical or impossible."

The journeys offered to AIS students and faculty included the Roman Ruins, Egypt, the Grand Canyon, Gettysburg Military Park, the Middle Ages and Renaissance Architecture, and the Stratosphere.

Anthony Gillett, Group Leader for Humanities, was impressed by the technology, stating “Google Expeditions has the capacity to bring an event from the past to life. As we learn about the Battle of Gettysburg, we can now put on our Virtual Reality goggles and journey to the actual battlefield. Or in learning about Ancient Rome, we can take students back to that time to ‘walk’ along the streets and see and hear what life was like. This is cutting-edge technology and will be very useful in the classroom.”

Rachel Hovington, Head of Curriculum at AIS, believes that a partnership with Google is a natural fit with the mission of AIS. “The school's commitment to interdisciplinary learning through STEAM will be strengthened by student Google Expeditions. This technology will allow students to be better able to unlock historical events and apply them as a key to the future in order to better analyze solutions to modern day situations.”

Nizar Alibhai '18 Uses MYP Personal Project to Change One Man's Life, as Seen on WXIA 11Alive

ATLANTA -- Sometimes, limits and barriers only exist if we let them.

Nizar Alibhai is a sophomore at the Atlanta International School -- with a class project he’s made his own.

"They call it a personal project,” Alibhai said. "I decided to help a homeless man and make a documentary.”

Nizar wanted to do more than help. He wanted to change someone's life.

It's what brought him to the Pleasantdale exit off Interstate 85, a place where those facing the hardest beg to survive.

"A lot of people said it was going to be too difficult or dangerous or like, 'Why would you want to do something like that?’” Alibhai said.

Nizar did not see barriers. He saw James.

"It was strange; he was dirty, un‐manicured -- he looked really skinny,” Alibhai said. "I couldn't imagine how he had survived for so long.”

Nizar and his dad approached James and learned about his time on the streets …

"There's not a book you can read,” James said. “You gotta experience it, and then you'll realize, 'Good God -- I don't want to live like this.”

Soon, he wouldn't have to.

"We took him that same day and took him to the hotel, the Northlake Inn and that's when everything started,” Alibhai said.

Nizar had, before he met James, raised enough money to get James an extended stay at a nearby hotel.
The stay began with James' first time in a long time flopping on a bed.

"It feels good, man,” James said after trying out the bed.  "It felt so good.”

James Porter has lived nearly six decades. He's been homeless for two years.

"I swear, it was so many days I slept on that pavement,” he said.

In that time, he has lost more than a roof. He said he went more than six months since without seeing his mother.

“She wants to see me get like this and stay like this -- that's all she asked for,” James said.

In the past few weeks James has received a makeover, a cell phone, and new clothes. Nizar even found him -- after a long search -- a job working security. It’s a job that James has maintained.

"A lot of them found out he was homeless and were like, 'Oh, we don't want to be associated with that,’” Nizar said. "We say, 'Oh, they're lazy; they can just get a job.' But in order to get a job, you need documents, ID, and a Social Security number…they leave this stuff behind. They basically start out with nothing."

James now has a beginning. It hit him as he returns to that exit on Pleasantdale. Not to beg, but to reflect.

"I cried, man -- real tears, man, and I begged God I wanted to change, man,’ James said. “I didn't want to live like this. I just didn't want to live like this no more in my life, man.”

Soon, James will have earned enough money to get a permanent apartment.

This past Easter Sunday, Nizar removed one more barrier:

"I got in contact with his mom,” Nizar said.

Dorothy Porter had waited nearly a year to see her son.

In that moment, the limits and barriers felt removed ... all because a student with a class project never obeyed his own.

"I told him, 'I'm here for you. And I will always be here for you,’” Nizar said.

"It means a lot to me in my heart,” James said. “They don't know me from a can of paint, but they trust me enough to help me.”

LANGUAGE ACQUISITION MODEL

In ELC, the children are with the same teacher and assistant in the same classroom, working every day in the target language (German, French or Spanish).

In 5K-Gr. 5 the school is organized into A days and B days. On the A days, your child will be with one teacher and on B days they will be in a different class, with a different teacher learning in a different language. You and your child will get skilled at remembering which day it is and what they need to bring with them. Specialist classes like PE, Music and Art will always fall on the same day (A or B).

School Supplies: Each grade level has posted a list of supplies on the school website. However, don’t worry, nothing is needed for the first day of school.

Grades Eight and Ten Outperform Other International School Students in Science by Eleven Percent

In February, Grade 8 and 10 students (the only students eligible) took the International School's Assessment (ISA) in science. Both grade levels outperformed other International School students taking the test by 11%.

The ISA scale for scientific literacy is based on a long-standing scale developed for the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development's (OECD's) Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). When you read of countries being compared every three years in terms of the scientific literacy of their students, this is based on PISA test data; thus we are able with this Science ISA (within the limitations of the data) to be able to compare our students to international scientific literacy levels.  Based on this PISA data, AIS tenth graders exiting the MYP program outperform the highest performing worldwide test takers that are located in Shanghai based Chinese schools by 16%, and the second highest test takers in Finland by 21%. They outperform USA national scores by 34%.

The test assesses whether students are able to use their knowledge of, and about science effectively to identify problems, acquire new knowledge, offer explanations, and draw evidence-based conclusions. The knowledge to be assessed is selected from the major fields of physics, chemistry, biology and earth and space sciences with the aim of including situations of relevance to real-life, or that represent important scientific concepts or theories.
